Free Spell for October: A self burial rite

Around this time of October the powers of the land begin to wane and slowly decay, and as the atmosphere shifts we also find it being heralded by things around us beginning to die as well. But let it be known that when talking about death around this time I am not literally talking about things dying but rather things ending or coming to a conclusion-  certain conditions, situations, relationships, and periods around and within ourselves begin to close as we transition from one state into another. Often times cleansings and cord cuttings are great rituals to perform to engage with this energy however for this free spell I would like to take it a step further by having us make a small burial for the current version of ourselves so that we can lay that aspect to rest in order for us to move forward and open a new era of ourselves. Think of it as a very mild ego death, for a moment we lose who we are in that moment and what we were so that we can rebuild ourselves into what we will become. So to begin you’ll need to assemble the following:

• A small bone

• Some clay or wet dirt that can be manipulated

• A small key

• A piece of cloth large enough to wrap everything

Gather the above items and also find a place that’s both peaceful and far enough from your home to prepare the symbolic funeral. Once you’ve arrived take the bone and clay/ dirt and shape a crude image of yourself with the materials. After the form you’ve molded is sufficient go ahead and release your breath upon it to imbue it with your essence- letting every inhale collect all your perfections and flaws and every exhale carrying them to inspirit the vessel. Continue to do this step until you’ve reached a point where the item has absorbed your identity. Once this has been done, hold onto this version of yourself and tell or release anything you’ve felt for the past couple of weeks, months, or years- don’t hold anything back and just be transparent with them. If you feel emotional and wish to cry feel free to express that towards it.

When you are finally ready, take this current version of yourself to the earth by digging a shallow grave for it. Before you lay yourself to rest take your key and hold it within the palm of the hand and recite the following:

Here lies I, in this earthly tomb

All of me that was given from the womb

As I push myself to rest easy in this unfamiliar cold bed

All my anxieties, guilt, and vices will be dissolved from my head

I take only my spirit and this key with myself

To close this door and open a new one somewhere else

Go ahead and wrap both the key and yourself with the cloth. Any final words could be said before you lay this version of yourself into the ground, then go ahead and lay them to rest. Leave the location and walk away knowing that what you were doesn’t dictate who you choose to be now, as that past version of yourself is now dead. Forgive yourself and know that this is a first step into a new era to unlock for you, a new chapter to open and explore. What happens from here on is solely up to what you are willing to begin, so do not hesitate or second guess what you know is best for you hereon.
