Free Spell for August: Harnessing the Sturgeon Moon

The sturgeon is the largest fresh water fish in all of the Great Lakes and has virtually remained unchanged for millions of years, they could also grow up to 7ft long and weigh close to a whopping 200 pounds! The folklore of the sturgeon is limited to the Great Lake regions as its influence wasn't as important as other fish like the salmon. But in these places that do hold the sturgeon in high regard they describe it as the "king of the fishes" due to its wisdom and ancient features. Some tribes even consider the sturgeon to represent sexuality (possibly due to its roe).

However as a Traditional Witch myself I found these bizarre attributes of arcane powers, hidden knowledge, and fertility very similar to that of the snake in my practice. Wherein the snake empowers the cunning flame from the land so does the sturgeon empower the cunning flame to reveal with the hidden eye, and so for this full moon rite we'll harness its energy to tap into that hidden sight within us as we dream.

So to begin you'll want to stand before a large body of water during the full moon. Steady your breath and ground your energy before its light and listen to the ebbing waves before you. Focus on your forehead and feel the light of the full moon penetrate your third eye, and sense it trickle down into your chest as it fills it. Also focus on the waves near your feet, and how its pulsing motion rocks the land back and forth. Every time the waves come towards the land feel that energy reach your soles, and fill your legs and abdomen until they too reach your heart center.

Continue this step until you've sense a light energy within you that makes you almost want to jump towards the moon, and feel it swim within your body and limbs. At this point you may also feel compelled to sit down and relax under the moonlight, mimic the pushing and pulling of the tides like a waterbender, or maybe something even carnal! But once you're done hold this moving energy within you for a moment and softly speak out loud:

Celestial Sturgeon, ancient water spirit and ruler of the third realm

From your abode at the dark depths of the roots of the world tree

Let me see what is unseen, and know what is unknown

Let me see my fate, or how it will be so

And lastly let me imbibe in your waters of wisdom

So shall it be, so shall it be, so shall it be....

Slowly push this energy outwards towards the water and let it swim freely from where it came from. That night or the nights after you will recieve a dream from the Sturgeon of something to come, something to be, or something to understand. To enhance this ritual you can make a tea from the recipe below to make its message more transparent.

Tea recipe:

1 tsp blue lotus (or 1 tsp of mugwort)

1 tsp wild lettuce leaf

1 tsp damiana

1 tsp yarrow flower

And some sweetener to taste (honey, agave syrup, etc.)

Combine the herbs together in an empty teabag and steep for about 10 minutes. Once it's cool add your sweetener and recite the invocation once again before you drink it. If you are pregnant please do not consume this then, simply get a glass of water with some lemon juice instead!
