Free spell for January: Threshold divination with wax

For January's free spell we will be doing a unique ritual to make use of this liminal tide of now and then, to elevate us from one previous state and to see what may come into our future. If you cannot perform this spell on new years' eve exactly then you can simply repurpose it for whenever you experience a transitional state of being- good examples often include either on or near the solstices or your birthday, but not the equinoxes as they are specifically days of equal power and therefore do not experience shifting energy.

So to begin you would gather three simple things: a bowl of water, a candle, and a skeleton key with a large hole. The candle color does not matter and the purpose of the large hole for the skeleton key is because you will pour candle wax through it, but I'll explain more later on!

Then at midnight on the day of or around new year's eve go to the closest threshold in your home, a space that shifts from one aspect to another like near the top or bottom of the stairs, a window, or even the doorway. Wherever it may be make sure you can sit comfortably nearby and set up your spell with the three items; to open up the veil you can recite the following to begin your working by calling upon the guidance of Janus, the two faced god of beginnings and endings:

Father Janus, source of years and transitions

Benevolent figure of what has and what will be

Ignite my vision with your light

So that I may capture what is not seen yet

Allow it to manifest before me

Never ending father of ages.

Once you have finished saying those words you could whisper or mentally speak out loud your questions for what may come in the upcoming year, then proceed by lighting your candle and begin to pour the wax through your skeleton key whilst catching the hot wax in the water below. At this point when the wax cools in the water it is up to your intuition to read the shapes and figures that have revealed themselves unto you for the upcoming future. There is no true right or wrong way to interpret what may be seen, as I've learnt that the best way to read wax is by not thinking about it at all and simply taking its meaning as it is. I may see a a certain amount of wax droplets as weeks or months, with actual larger pieces of cooled wax sometimes being omens of what may come. Animals, people, spirits, places, or things can be seen but once again as I mentioned there is no right or wrong way to receive these messages.

To enhance this ritual I would encourage some of you to wear a veil to further obscure your sight, allowing your intuition to be strenghten. You may also choose to burn some mugwort or some of our psychic vision incense, but regardless of how you do it I hope it can shed some light on some things you seek to know.
